All hat feathers are hand-carved using a series of specialized hand tools. The wood is locally salvaged from arborists, the power company, and trees that fall down in storms. No live trees were hurt in the making of this feather.

The feather is painted with non-toxic milk paint. It is a porous, durable paint that may weather over time, but will not easily chip. The handle is treated with a mix of citrus and tung oil. Tung oil is a drying oil that improves the durability of the painted feather and makes it weatherproof. It will have a light citrus scent.
